PRISM-BACKED

Prism Tiles

glass prism tile moldsIn the late 1800’s and early 1900’s these tiles were used in commercial buildings, specifically over the front doors and windows, in order to illuminate the interior space. They refract light into the building. The effect of the tiles is similar to lenses of lighthouses. In the days before abundant electric light these tiles helped illuminate the interior. The tiles were wrapped in copper foil, and then electroplated with zinc to produce a weather tight window without the use of glaze. prism tile glass mold

These tiles are pressed in the original molds of the American 3-Way Prism Company, which are over 100 years old. The American 3-Way Prism Company was absorbed into the Luxfer Prism Company (1897-1921). Two of the original founders, William H. Winslow and Edward C. Waller, were clients of Frank Lloyd Wright. Frank Lloyd Wright had 39 patented designs with the American Luxfer Prism Company.
